FREE Pre-Puppy Consultation

Designed for people who are thinking of getting a puppy to help you at the very beginning of your decision to share your life with a dog.  Sadly, a substantial number of dogs end up in rescue centres because they don’t match the lifestyle of their families.

Victoria supports a number of dog rescues by undertaking home checks to ensure that homes are right for the dog but unfortunately not all breeders and rehoming centres carry out similar checks, nor do they all take back their pups if their new home doesn’t work out.  Offering a free pre-puppy consultation is our way of trying to support dog rescues by hopefully preventing some dogs needing to be rehomed.

We will also cover what to look for in a responsible breeder.  People sometimes think that puppies are a blank canvas, however parentage and epigenetics have an impact before they are even born.  When you also factor in the impact of a puppy’s experiences in the first 8 weeks of their life, it is clear that you are not getting a completely blank canvas.  Whilst what happens after 8 weeks of age will have a significant impact on a dog’s life, choosing a puppy who comes from parents with a good temperament and who has been attentively nurtured for their first 8 weeks of life, will give you the best starting point.

We will discuss the needs of your family, the needs of a dog, your expectations of dog ownership and which breed types could be a good match.  Many people choose a dog based on aesthetics which is perfectly understandable, but not very practical.  Breed types have predisposed behavioural traits and temperaments, for example collies will herd, hounds will chase and terriers will dig.  Many years ago, dogs had jobs to do and, whilst many have acclimatised well to sleeping on our sofas, they still have innate traits and need appropriate mental and physical stimulation.

The FREE consultation consists of a 30 minute chat by phone or video.  You will be asked  questions to help us evaluate which breed type, sex and age of dog will suit your lifestyle and environment best and if you can provide all that a new dog needs.  For example, if you want a springer spaniel you will need to be happy wearing a waterproof and wellies and enjoy the smell of damp dogs!!
